How to Successfully Outsource Your CAD Work
Outsourcing CAD work can save significant time and cost โ but only if you do it right. Here is a practical guide to getting the best results.
Outsourcing CAD work is one of the most effective ways to scale your engineering output without adding permanent headcount. But a poorly managed outsourcing relationship will cost you more in rework and frustration than it saves. Here is how to do it right.
1. Define Your Standard Before You Start
The most common cause of rework in outsourced CAD projects is an undefined drawing standard. Before sending your first file, prepare a one-page standard that covers: projection angle (first or third), title block requirements, GD&T standard, dimension units, and output formats. Share this with your CAD partner and ask them to confirm they can work to it.
2. Send Complete Briefs
Incomplete briefs produce incomplete work. A good CAD brief includes: the file or sketch you are working from, the required output (drawing, model, or both), the standard to follow, the output format, any specific requirements or constraints, and the deadline.
3. Start with a Small Test Project
Before committing to a large project, send a small representative piece of work. Evaluate the output against your standard and your expectations. This gives you a low-risk way to test the relationship before it matters.
4. Protect Your IP
Always sign an NDA before sharing any proprietary design files. A professional CAD partner will have no hesitation in signing. Also confirm how files are stored, who has access, and what happens to your files at the end of the engagement.
5. Build a Long-Term Relationship
The real efficiency gains from outsourcing come after 3โ6 months, when your CAD partner knows your standards, your preferred way of working, and your product range. Treat outsourcing as a partnership, not a transaction.
